Digital media such as CD’s, DVD’s, and books are an extensive product line in the consumer packaged goods industry that can derive substantial benefits from the use of RFID in the supply chain of retail music stores, movie rental outlets and libraries for tracking, tracing, management and authentication of goods. However due to the presence of aluminium in CD’s and DVD’s that reflect and interfere with radio frequency signals, satisfactory performance of RFID CD/DVD solutions have to date proven elusive. SPACECODE’s solution ensures reliability where other solutions and technologies cannot. Our focus on developing solutions for the consumer goods industry has resulted in the development of a best in class digital media RFID solution able to identify products with 100% reliability despite close proximity stacking and the extensive presence of metal.
Benefits for the customer are significant. Without this system, customers wanting to buy or check out a CD or DVD had to take the product cover to the store or library check out staff, who then had to retrieve the actual disk for processing. This multistage process adds to the amount time staff must spend checking out and checking in CDs and DVDs, and makes it impossible for customers to use the self-checkout systems that some libraries and outlets have instituted. The system can also be used to prevent theft of items since the integrated transponder not only identifies the item, but can also include a security component that will send a signal to the security gates as it passes through unless it has been deactivated by an RFID reader when the item is sold or checked out. Again this eliminates the need for the multistep EAS process and systems currently in place in many stores and outlets where staff must manually attach and activate EAS tags to products arriving at the store, and then deactivate the EAS tag attached to each item as the item is sold or being checked outturned. In addition, the SPACECODE RFID system ensures 100% accuracy and security, whereas EAS cannot achieve such performance. |
