SPACECODE launches CD-DVD RFID solution.

SPACECODE, a European based maker of RFID products for multiple applications in consumer packaged goods and related industries has developed breakthrough CD RFID technology that has the potential to revolutionise the management, circulation, control security and tracking of CD and DVD for customers.

The company’s CountDown™ system has been developed while working with numerous customers and partners in libraries, retail music, or movie rental outlets. Applications for the system include item and shelf-level identification and tracking of CDs and DVDs, using portable or fixed RFID readers to quickly and easily double-check that the correct items are stored in the right order on the proper shelf or rack, improved and automated POS processes, and seamless centralized inventory management system to deliver security and stock reading capability for extensive CD and DVD stocks and collections.

Although composed of polycarbonate plastic, CDs and DVDs also have a metallic reflecting layer, typically made of aluminum. This metallic layer reflects radio-frequency (RF) transmissions, significantly reducing the ability for an RFID reader to successfully read an RFID tag placed on a disc. SPACECODE has developed technology that overcomes this problem. The SPACECODE tag is fitted onto or incorporated into the clear polycarbonate hub, around the centre of this disc. The inlays' ultra-thin design consists of a copper transponder and a computer chip, operating at 125khz or 13.56 MHz, that is easily integrated into numerous packaging materials. Extensive tests and implementations with different CDs, DVDs as well as various CD-ROM drives, CD players and other devices have shown that both fitted and integrated tags have no effect on running performance of the discs and do not cause any damage to the drives or discs. The product lines feature a unique, 64-bit (or higher) factory-programmed encrypted UID (unique identification), that cannot be duplicated, ensuring that no item is misidentified. Each transponder contains 2,000 bits of memory and is available in a read/write format, allowing it to be programmed with both user and application-specific information.

Our focus on developing solutions for the consumer goods industry has resulted in the development of a best in class CD/DVD RFID solution able to identify products with 100% reliability despite close proximity stacking and the extensive presence of metal. Focusing on and addressing this key unmet market need has ensured that the company occupies a clear gap in the provision of customized CD and DVD solutions for customers that include marquee consumer packaged goods corporations where the cutting edge solution provides breakthrough innovations that allow these companies to generate clear advantage over their competitors. ‘SPACECODE together with its growing network of international partners and customers, is engineering the future of RFID in CD, DVD, and book applications’ says Pavlo Protopapa, CEO of SPACECODE.
